With the weather anything but settled - calm conditions saw drizzly rain and mist persist for much of the morning; hot sunshine broke through for a while in the afternoon before thick fog rolled in during the evening - there were very welcome signs of there being just a few more grounded migrants about than has been the case for the last week. There were no surprises but Chiffchaff and Spotted Flycatcher got into double figures around the centre and south of the island and a new Short-eared Owl at the Bill was amongst the wide scatter of ones and twos of a fair range of seasonal species. For the best part of the day visible passage was non-existent but 2 Bee-eaters made it through and passed over Weston. Wader variety dropped away, with 2 Knot at Ferrybridge and a Grey Plover at Reap Lane the best on offer amongst the more routine fare. Seawatching was often hindered by reduced visibility although the 216 commic terns, 2 Black Terns and single Dark-bellied Brent Goose that passed through off Chesil early in the morning indicated there was still movement afoot; the lingering Black-throated Diver also remained in Portland Harbour.
Although Red Admirals were on the wing in some quantity once the sun broke through immigrant moth interest consisted of just a handful of Diamond-back Moth and Silver Y attracted to the various moth-traps.
